aerial photograph of Old Wardour Castle Wiltshire England UK.Built for Baron Lovell shortly after Richard II gave him a license to crenellate in 1392. The castle is the only hexagonal castle in England although a number of such designs were also built during the medieval period in France. During the English Civil war it was originally held by the Royalist but taken by the parliamentarians before being retaken again by the Royalists. The fighting left the Castle in ruins and after the end of the hostility the owners chose to build a new home and keep the old castle as a picturesque ruin.
