Oliver's Castle hill fort Wiltshire
aerial photograph of Oliver's Castle hill fort Wiltshire, England UK. Originally called Roundway or Rundaway Castle the Iron Age hillfort takes its name from events much later in its history. In 1643 the Battle of Roundway Down was fought around the fort when a force of Royalist Cavalry from Oxford attacked Parliamentarian forces besieging the nearby town of Devizes. The Parliamentarians were heavily defeated and put to flight. Many of the fleeing Parliamentarians died when they inadvertently galloped over the edge of the precepice surrounding the hillfort. The fort has been called Oliver's Castle ever since, even though Oliver Cromwell wasn't personally
