Thornborough Henges aerial photograph
aerial photograph of the Thornborough Henges neolithic monument in Yorkshire England UK. Dating from 3500 to 2500 BC the monument consists of a set of three henges plus connecting cursus and burial grounds. When built the banks would have been covered in white gypsum making the layout strikingly visible. The exact purpose of the henge is unknown but it is clearly ceremonial and also the layout bears a resemblance to the Orion's Belt star pattern. Although the henges themselves are protected ancient monuments, the land surrounding is not protected and some of it is threatened with quarrying.
