The castle was heavily fought over during the anarchy of the 12th century and between the 15th and 17th century the castle was used by Council of Wales and the Marches which ruled over Wales and parts of England. The castle was initially held by Royalists during the English Civil war but it was taken by Parliamentarians after a short siege in 1646. The castle was garrisoned until the mid 17th century after which it fell into ruin.
