Caus Castle is an Iron Age Hillfort with the remains of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle built on top of it.The Castle was built by Roger le Corbet shortly after the Norman conquest at the end of the 11th century. By the end of the 12th century the castle was sufficiently important that it had a small town within its bailey.The town had two main streets and two churches. By the 16th century the castle was in poor condition and inhabited by only two tenants. The castle was finally destroyed in the 1645 during the English Civil War when the Royalist garrison was defeated by atacking Parliamentarian forces.
