Magdalen College was founded in 1458 by the Bishop of Winchester. The Great Tower was built 1492 - 1509 and designed by William Orchard who also designed the Cloister ( Great Quad ) which was constructed in 1474 to 1480. The "new building" at the back was added in 1733 and was originally intended to be part of a quad, however the rest was never built so it remains unquaded nearly 300 years later. C. S.
