Lancaster Canal where it is cut by the A590 aerial photograph
aerial photograph of the Lancaster Canal where it is cut by the A590. The course of the canal runs top left to bottom right across the image with a bridge under the railway. The Lancaster Canal Link to Kendal was opened in 1819 and finally severed by the construction of the M6 motorway and A590 road in the 1960s. There are plans by the Northern Reaches Restoration Group to reopen the canal to Kendal and in order to acheive that a tunnel will need to go under the A590 main road at this location
