The name Ings comes from a time when the area was inhabited by Vikings and stems from the old Norse for marsh. The pits were formed by the cement industry in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today the area is a wildlife reserve run by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. Opened in 1973 the reserve is one of the top tourist attractions for bird watchers.
