Derventio was constructed under the governor Agricola (AD40 to AD93) around the same time as the fort at York ( Eboracum ) and was one of the last to be garrisoned in England in the late 4th and early fifth centuries. Just after the Norman Conquest a wooden Castle was built on the site which was rebuilt in stone in the 12th- 13th century.The castle was replaced by a house in the 16th century. In 1674 the house was inherited by two sisters who could not agree on the inheritance and so the Sheriff ordered the house demolished and the stones shared between them.
