aerial photograph of Farleigh Hungerford Castle Somerset England UK. Farleigh Hungerford Castle was constructed by Sir Thomas Hungerford, in the 14th century between 1377 and 1383. The outer court was added in the 15th Century.During the English Civil war the castle was owned by Sir Edward Hungerford who fought for the parliamentarians. The Castle was taken and occupied by Royalist forces between 1643 and 1645.Because of its loyal Parliamentarian owner the castle was one of very few which escaped slighting at the end of the Civil War. By the 18th Century the castle was no longer occupied and had fallen into ruin. Today it is one of Somerset top tourist destinations and is owned by English Heritage. The building is Grade I listed.
