aerial photograph of Caister Castle Norfolk England UK.Built in 1446 the castle was heavily damaged in a siege by the Duke of Norfolk in 1469 because of an inheritance dispute. Back in the 15th Century inheritance disputes were not sorted by giving all the money to the legal trade as now, but by simply laying siege. After a few months quarrelling and exchange of a few crossbow bolts the inheritance dispute was solved with the castle going to the besieging Duke of Norfolk. Incidentally the original meaning of the word quarrelling was the from combat with crossbows where the crossbow bolt is called a "Quarrel" which is derived from the French carré meaning square which was the cross section of a typical armour piercing Crossbow bolt.The Castle fell into ruin in the 17th century when it was replaced by the adjacent house. The castle is unusual in that its style mirrors the Wasserburg of western Germany
