aerial photograph Wigmore Castle Herefordshire England UK, scene of the Battle of Mortimer's Cross in 1461 during the war of the roses. The castle was founded around 1070 just after the Norman conquest. The Castle was besieged by Henry II in 1155 and a number of mounds around the site may be the remains of Henrys siege works. The castle was in poor condition by the 16th Century and its defenses were finally dismantled during the civil war.The castle has lain in ruins ever since.
