The line was originally constructed by the Manchester and Birmingham Railway in 1840 and they then merged with the LNWR in 1846. The line originally terminated at Travis Street, but in 1842 what is now Picadilly station opened ( top of photo ) The line to Sheffield was built by the Sheffield, Ashton-Under-Lyne and Manchester Railway also in 1842. This included a Station at Arwick in the lower right of the photo.
