The Siegework is the remains of a redoubt built during the English Civil War to defend the village of Tissington from attack. During the war the adjacent Tissington Hall was owned by Colonel Fitzherbert who fought for the Royalist cause. The Royalists in the area were routed in 1644 after significant fighting in the Ashbourne area.
