RAF Elvington airfield
aerial photograph of Stamford Bridge, Yorkshire , England UK. Site of the famous battle in 1066 when King Harold defeated the invading army of King Harald Hardrada of Norway. The town was also the site of the Roman Settlement and fort of "Derventio" which lies just to the south of the present village. Derventio was first discovered after crop marks showed up in aerial photographs taken in the drought of 1976.These showed the remains of the Roman settlement in the foreground of the image. Unfortunately in this image the crops are dark green and so do not show the archaeology, although very interestingly the light colored field on the left shows two converging lines which converge at a likely bridge over the River Derwent
