Grade I listed Newcastle Central Railway Station was opened in 1850 as Newcastle-on-Tyne Central and was designed by John Dobson. The station was opened by Queen Victoria 29 August 1850. In the 1970s the Metro underground station was constructed under the main station building which opened in 1981.
