aerial photograph of Kinver Edge Rock Houses, Staffordshire, England UK. Kinver Edge has been inhabited since the bronze age and one of the Rock Houses, known as "Holy Austin", was used as a Hermitage until the 16th Century. The Rock houses were inhabited by up to 11 families until the 1960's after which they were deemed unsuitable for habitation, but have since been preserved by the National Trust. These were England's last last troglodyte dwellings and provided J. R. R. Tolkien with the inspiration to create The Hobbits.
