Muskham Sconce English Civil War Siege Works at Newark on Trent
aerial photograph of Muskham Sconce , one of the English Civil War Siege Works at Newark on Trent Nottinghamshire England UK. Newark on Trent was an important strategic garrison held by the Royalists from the begining of the Civil War in 1642 until the King ordered it to surrender in 1646. The sconce was constructed by the Royalist forces as part of the defenses around Newark with the Sconce covering approaches by the Great North Road and Muskham Bridge over the River Trent. During the second siege of Newark in March 1645 it was stormed and for a time held by Scottish troops under the Earl of Leven who were fighting for the Parliamentarians . They strengthened the East facing defenses with a redoubt built on the North East corner.
