Chesters Roman Fort Hadrian's Wall
aerial photograph of Chesters Roman Fort on Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland. Originally called Cilurnum the fort was designed as a Cavalry fort to guard the adjacent Chesters Bridge river crossing. The fort was home to Cohorts of Dalmatian Cavalry , from modern-day Bosnia and a Cohort of Vangiones from Germany who were stationed here and in other far flung corners of the Roman Empire after the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest.
