Plympton Castle from the air
aerial photograph of Plympton Castle, Plymouth Devon UK.Plympton Castle is a Norman Motte and bailey castle with a shell keep built shortly after the Norman Conquest, around 1100 by Richard de Redvers. It was rebuilt and improved a number of times during the medieval period and the surviving stonework probably dates from the 13th century. The castle was besieged in 1224 and it was possibly refortified during the English Civil War but abandoned in 1647.
