Old Burrow Roman Fortlet aerial photograph
aerial photograph of Old Burrow Roman Fortlet on the north Cast of Devon England UK. Old Burrow is an exceptionally well preserved Roman Fortlet built to guard the north Devon coast. Originally it would have had a timber fortlet whith only the earthworks remaining today.Fortlets are relativly rare in Britain with only around 50 examples known, with 25 of those being in Scotland. One unusual design feature of this fortlet is the offset entrances for inner and outer enclosures. It was constructed around the middle of the first century AD under the Emperor Claudius and was in use for a relativly short period of time.It was probably home to a Roman century, which despite the name consisted of around 65 to 80 auxiliary troops.
