aerial photograph of Brougham Castle Cumbria. Built in the 13th Century to defend the river crossing where the River Eamont and the River Lowther meet. The site chose in adjacent the site the Romans chose for their fort some thousand years before. The Castle played an important war during the Anglos-Scottish wars and was sacked by the Scots in 1388. The Castle was abandoned in the 18th century with a sale of contents in 1714 after which it fell into ruin.
