Built for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle Castle Howard took more than 100 years to build starting in 1699 and involved the complete removal of Henderskelfe Castle the village of Henderskelfe which previously stood in the grounds. It was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh who alos designed Blenheim Palace. In 2003 Time Team visited searching for remains of Henderskelfe village.
