The stone castle replaced a previous wooden castle built around 1130. The castle was of immense strategic importance and continually fought over during the medieval period. Between 1642 and 1648 , during the English Civil War , the castle changed hands seven times. The Castle was refortified in1745 during the Jacobite Rebellion and again during the Napoleonic period. It was significantly damaged by naval gunfire during a raid by the German fleet during the First World War and was manned again during the Second World War.
