First recorded in the Doomsday book of 1086, Oswestry Castle lies near the English - Welsh border and was much fought over , changing hands numerous times during the medieval period. Richard II held parliament here in 1398 and during the English Civil war it was initially held by the Royalists before being captured by the parliamentarians in 1644. Following the war the castle was slighted and has remained in ruins ever since.
