aerial photograph of Battle Abbey East Sussex. Built under in 1094 under the orders of William the Conqueror the abbey was built on the site of the Battle of Hastings with the High Alter built on the exact spot where King Harold was slain the battle. The Abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII with much of it falling into ruin thereafter. Parts of the Abbey are now used as a school and the site is managed by English Heritage who call the whole site "1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield"
