aerial photograph of Metchely Roman Fort Birmingham, West Midlands . Little shows of the Roman Fort today, just a raised line largley reconstructed which was once the north west corner of the outer Ramparts. The position of the corner tower is marked out by a modern wooden frame erected in 1956. The fort was one of the earliest in Britain dating from the first century and contained a mix of Infantry and Cavalry units. There was also a Vicus to the west of the fort. At some point during the Roman Occupation the fort was rebuilt on a much smaller scale. The remains of the fort were clearly visible well into the 20th century but were largely obliterated by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 1933.
