aerial photograph of Newcastle town wall, Newcastle upon Tyne , Tyne and Wear England UK showing the West Wall. The City walls were build during the medieval period mainly in the 13th and 14 th century. The walls kept the city safe from successive Scottish attacks during the middle ages until the walls were finally breached during the English Civil war. The walls were last reinforced during the Jacobite rebellions of the mid 18th century but by the end of that century they were no longer needed and the first sections were demolished.
