Norwich Castle was built under the orders of William the Conqueror shortly after the Norman Conquest in order to secure his rule.The Castle was captured by Hugh Bigod during the rebellion of 1173-74 but handed back to the Crown at the end of the revolt.The Castle was used as a Gaol from 1220 to 1887 and was converted to a museum in 1897, a role which it fulfils to the present day.
