Lowesby deserted medieval village (DMV) Leicestershire
aerial photograph of Lowesby deserted medieval village (DMV) Leicestershire England UK. The history of Lowesby can be seen it its name. English town names ending in "by" are Viking in origin with the word meaning settlement and the first part of the name often indicating the name of the founder. Lowesby lies well within the Danelaw. In 1086 the village was entered into the Doomsday book. Records show that there were 12 families in the village in 1309, however by 1487 the village had been converted to pasture and was largely deserted. The hall remained although it was later replaced by a newer structure. The medieval church survives to this day, a last reminder of the medieval history of the site.
