Penwortham Old Bridge over the River Ribble at Preston aerial photograph
aerial photograph of Penwortham Old Bridge over the River Ribble at Preston Lancahsire. Grade II listed Penwortham Old Bridge was built in 1759 and replaced a previous bridge which collapsed in 1755. Behind are the remains of the West Lancashire Railway Bridge built in 1881. The bridge carried the line to Southport. In 1925 a gas pipe was added to the structure so when the railway was closed in 1965 the piers were left in place to keep the gas pipeline in service.
