aerial photograph of Freshwater Redoubt, Isle of Wight also known as Fort Redoubt. The fort was one of a series of Coastal defense redoubts initiated by Lord Palmerston. This for was competed in 1856 and was intended to defend against attack from the French, however after France was defeated in the war of 1870 little threat remained. Originally armed with 7 muzzle loading Canon. The caponier building in the ditch was originally the barracks for men while the cottage behind the fort provided married quarters. The fort was sold off in 1928 and became a private home.
